As one of the last All-80′s stations in the country 102.9 The Point became a victim of cluster programming. Sister station WJGL’s “96.9 The Eagle” 70′s and 80′s based Classic Hits format was stepping on its toes and not giving The Point much room to thrive. By flipping to Modern Rock, X102.9 is able to flank sister WFYV “Rock 105″ from Clear Channel’s Modern Rock WPLA “107.3 The Planet”.

The Point went out with the same song that had launched it in nine years earlier: Simple Minds “Don’t You Forget About Me”. System of a Down’s “Chop Suey” ushered in X102.9′s life.

Top 40 radio in Jacksonville, Florida has long been synonimized with WAPE. The Big Ape has been a part of the landscape in Jacksonville since the 60′s, first at 690 AM and then at 95.1 FM. However in recent years the station has had developed a strong adult lean. At the beginning of March rumors began spreading about the future of “Smooth Jazz 97.9″. Speculation concentrated on a Talk format consisting of programming from sister station WTKS in Orlando including Howard Stern. At Noon on March 10, 2000 WFSJ began simulcasting WTKS, but this would be a short-lived stunt. As the next week progressed the station would revert to a more traditional stunt of a beating heart with liners interspersed. Clear Channel, which has seemed intent on launching a CHR in almost every market lately saw the hole for another CHR to take on WAPE. The New 97-9 Kiss-FM signed-on at 3:00pm on Friday, March 17, 2000 promoting a million dollar guarantee of 20,000 songs in a row.

What better way to represent a new year/decade/century/millennium than to live in the past? During the second half of the year 2000, that was the attitude adopted by a growing number of radio companies as the “All-80′s” format (focusing on Rock and Alternative selections of that decade) began appearing rapidly across the country. Cox Broadcasting had already debuted this format under the name “106-9 the Point” in Houston. With WMXQ struggling as Hot AC “Mix 103″, Cox decided to bring All-80′s to Jacksonville…following an automated countdown, on November 1, 2000, at 5:00 pm, “102-9 the Point, The Best of the 80′s and More” was born.
