“Fresh 102.7” Las Vegas Becomes “102.7 Now”

Top 40 radio in Las Vegas has usually revolved around CBS Radio’s 98.5 KLUC. There had been a few challengers to its throne, most recently Clear Channel’s 101.9 Kiss-FM and Wild 102 in the early 21st century. Beasley Broadcasting’s “Fresh 102.7” had been mired at the bottom of the market since its changeover from All 80’s “Star 102.7” in 2007. By flipping to CHR, the new “102.7 Now” is taking a bit out of CBS’ own playbook in Los Angeles and New York by going after the the CHR powerhouse as well as Urban KVEG “Hot 97.5” in an attempt to allow sister KKLZ to move closer to the top of the ratings in Las Vegas.

93.9 WWFT Indianapolis Becomes “Warm 93.9”

On November 17, 2007 93.9 WWFT Fishers/Indianapolis dropped its 11-month old News/Talk format in favor of Christmas Music as “The Christmas Channel”. This move, in retaliation for Emmis’ announced move of 1070 WIBC to 93.1 FM on December 26, gave Indianapolis its 2nd all-Christmas format. On December 26, WWFT stunt changed to an announcement of a new format launching on January 2, 2008 at 9:39am. The new format, “Warm 93.9” which debuted with The Police “Every Breathe You Take”, was clearly designed to take shares away from Emmis’ WYXB “B105.7”. Cumulus’ has similar “Warm” branded AC’s that it acquired from Susquehanna along with WWFT in Cincinnati and York, PA.

WCKG Becomes Fresh 105.9

With the return of Dan Mason to the head of CBS’ Radio division it soon became apparent that the company’s FM Talkers were in danger. The “Free-FM” brand was dropped and the format was dropped in New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego, and Pittsburgh. In early October 2007, rumors began swirling that the Chicago outlet would soon change. Speculation ran from Rock to Spanish but kept coming back to the “Fresh” AC brand. On October 30 it was officially announced that the station would be changing formats. Afternoon host Steve Dahl was the only survivor as his show would be moved to morning drive on sister “104.3 Jack-FM” WJMK. Outside of Dahl’s show, the station went into stunt mode with Best-Of clips from Dahl’s 11 yea...

107.7 WJCD flips from AC to Smooth Jazz

As a rimshot in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach market, the 107.7 frequency has had a hard time competing in the market. In the past few years, it slid from Urban AC to Smooth Jazz to AC and back to Smooth Jazz. The AC format had been simulcast on 92.1 WCDG to give it a better shot at competing, but it had since been flipped to fill the Oldies niche following WFOG changing to WVBW. However, the battle between WVBW and WWDE also had prevented WJCD from gaining any momentum. Thus following its all-Christmas programming, WJCD moved back to Smooth Jazz on December 26, 2006. 94.9 Lite-FM WLTM becomes The Bull WUBL

The Autumn of 2006 brought massive shakeups to Clear Channel’s Atlanta cluster, affecting all 5 of their FM stations in the market. The first shoe dropped on November 17 when Modern Rocker “105.3 The Buzz” moved to the stronger 96.1 frequency that had been home to heritage Classic Rocker “96 Rock” becoming Active Rock “Project 9-6-1”. Over the coming weeks, the 105.3 frequency would become Regional Mexican as “El Patron”, Viva 105.7 would lose its 96.7 simulcast, and here Mainstream AC “94.9 Lite-FM” would go Country as “The Bull”. The AC format on WLTM was never able to gain traction against Cox’s heritage AC WSB-FM “B98.5” following its relaunch after its long run as “Peach 94.9”. ...
